Wharfedale Denton 1S Loudspeakers

A New Compact Classic, Reimagined
The Wharfedale DENTON 1S is not a simple revival. It is a clean-sheet reinterpretation of what a compact, modern hi-fi loudspeaker can be, combining contemporary acoustic engineering with an unmistakable British design identity that carries the DENTON lineage confidently forward. First introduced in 1967, the original DENTON was Wharfedale’s answer to a changing hi-fi landscape, and the DENTON 1 of 1974 followed with a coaxial point-source architecture that challenged convention in both engineering and appearance. The DENTON 1S draws directly from that spirit of reinvention, adopting a sophisticated coaxial driver design within a modern, compact, and purposeful form that is playful yet technically serious, confident yet refined, and unmistakably contemporary while honouring Wharfedale’s enduring legacy.
Coaxial Precision: One Acoustic Centre
At the heart of the DENTON 1S is a brand-new coaxial driver that positions a 25mm silk-dome tweeter concentrically within a 165mm enhanced polypropylene cone. By allowing both drivers to radiate from a single acoustic centre, the DENTON 1S achieves inherent time alignment and phase coherence that a conventional two-way design simply cannot replicate. The result is a remarkably unified presentation with stable stereo imaging, a wide and immersive soundstage, and consistent tonal balance across a broad listening area. Whether seated centrally or listening off-axis, the DENTON 1S delivers a smooth, coherent sound that belies its compact dimensions. The coaxial configuration also enables a smaller, more rigid cabinet with minimal front-baffle interruption, enhancing structural integrity while contributing to the speaker’s clean and refined aesthetic.
Tuned for Musical Coherence
Development of the DENTON 1S was led by Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau, with particular focus on crossover integration. Through extensive modelling and critical listening evaluation, the crossover network has been engineered to ensure the drivers operate as a single, unified system rather than as separate components, crossing over at 2.6kHz. The result is a loudspeaker that sounds natural, balanced, and free from tonal discontinuities, with music flowing with convincing timing and scale, preserving detail and dynamic expression without fatigue. These are qualities more often associated with significantly larger loudspeakers, delivered here in an 11.5-litre compact standmount enclosure.
Big Sound from a Compact Form
Despite its modest footprint, the DENTON 1S delivers impressive low-frequency authority. Its carefully tuned bass reflex enclosure and optimised 11.5-litre internal volume enable bass extension down to 45Hz at minus 6dB, exceptional performance for a compact standmount loudspeaker. The enhanced polypropylene cone brings improved rigidity, low mass, and controlled self-damping characteristics to deliver fast transient response, natural tonal balance, and reduced colouration across the critical midrange region. High frequencies are smooth and detailed, aided by the silk-dome tweeter’s damped rear chamber and high-flux motor system. With 88dB sensitivity and a benign 8-ohm nominal impedance, the DENTON 1S is easily driven by a wide range of amplifiers rated between 30 and 100 watts.
Stand, Shelf, or Wall
The DENTON 1S has been engineered for placement flexibility as well as acoustic performance. Primarily designed as a standmount loudspeaker, it also offers suitability for installed or on-wall applications via a discreet rear 3/8-inch mounting point. A specially engineered rear-panel Brilliance EQ switch provides subtle tonal adjustment to optimise performance for free-space, shelf-mounted, or near-wall positioning, allowing the DENTON 1S to adapt effortlessly to its environment without dictating room layout.
Crafted for Modern Living
Visually, the DENTON 1S reinterprets Wharfedale Heritage for contemporary interiors. Smooth cabinet curves, a luxurious matte paint finish, classic cloth grille, and retro-inspired badging blend past and present with considerable confidence. Beneath this refined exterior lies advanced cabinet construction incorporating multi-layer panels, internal bracing, and carefully controlled damping to suppress unwanted resonance. Available in matte black, matte white, and an all-new matte blue finish, the DENTON 1S is designed to complement contemporary living spaces while preserving the unmistakable identity of the DENTON lineage.
