Dedicated Valve Amplification for Headphones
The McIntosh MHA200 is a compact headphone amplifier for adding a dedicated listening station to your hi-fi system. Two 12AT7 dual-triode valves amplify the incoming signal, while two 12BH7A valves drive the output stage. Its analogue signal path connects to a suitable source or preamplifier through balanced XLR or unbalanced RCA inputs.
Match the Amplifier to Your Headphones
McIntosh uses its Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers to match the amplifier to different headphone loads. The front-panel selector provides four impedance ranges: 32–100, 100–250, 250–600 and 600–1,000 ohms. Select the range appropriate to your headphones to make use of the MHA200’s 500mW output.
There are three headphone connection options: a pair of balanced 3-pin XLR sockets for separate left and right channels, a balanced 4-pin stereo XLR socket, and a conventional 6.35mm stereo jack. This gives you a choice of connections without restricting the amplifier to one cable format.
At Home in an Existing System
Use the MHA200’s volume control with a fixed-output source, or set it to the centre unity-gain position when controlling the level from a variable-output preamplifier. Power Control input and output connections allow coordinated switching with compatible McIntosh components.
The polished stainless-steel chassis, exposed valves and die-cast McIntosh badge give the MHA200 its distinctive appearance. A protective valve cover is included. Its compact dimensions make it practical to place alongside your source equipment without requiring a full-width component shelf.
