Description
Bringing Your Vinyl Collection Back to Life
The NAD PP4 is a sophisticated and versatile phono preamplifier that allows you to enjoy your vinyl LP collection through any stereo system, regardless of whether your amplifier or receiver features a dedicated phono input. Compatible with both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges, and featuring a high-quality analogue-to-digital converter with USB interface and record level control, the PP4 is a remarkably capable and comprehensive component that reflects NAD’s long heritage of award-winning phono preamplifier design stretching back to the late 1970s.
Exceptional MM and MC Circuit Design
The PP4’s Moving Coil section is a four-transistor, low-distortion amplifier optimised for the very low source impedance of Moving Coil cartridges. Employing ultra-low intrinsic base resistance transistors with two operating in parallel push-pull configuration for a further 3dB reduction in input noise, the MC stage delivers an input noise of typically 60mV and a gain of 24dB, bringing even the lowest-output MC cartridges up to Moving Magnet level. Input impedance is 100 ohms in parallel with 180pF.
The Moving Magnet stage uses a low-noise, low-distortion operational amplifier with RIAA equalisation and an infrasonic filter in the feedback network, delivering a gain of 35.2dB at 1kHz with a 23dB overload margin. RIAA response accuracy is held to within plus or minus 0.3dB from 50Hz to 20kHz, with the infrasonic filter attenuating turntable rumble at 3dB down at 10Hz and 14dB down at 5Hz. Costly metal film resistors and film-type capacitors are used exclusively throughout the signal path for both measured performance and a more refined listening experience.
Vinyl Digitisation via USB
The PP4 combines the performance of a high-quality MM/MC phono preamplifier with a precision analogue-to-digital converter and USB interface, allowing you to connect your turntable directly to a PC or Mac for transferring your record collection to digital files. A record level control provides precise management of the digital output volume to prevent input overload. The included VinylStudio Lite software for Mac and PC enables direct recording of LPs as either WAV or MP3 files, ready for burning to CD or transfer to any portable music player. The digital stage is fed entirely by the 5V USB supply of the connected computer, providing total isolation of the analogue and digital stages for clean, low-noise performance.
A Refined and Practical Power Supply
The PP4 operates from an external 24-volt power supply, a significant increase over earlier designs that improves overload margins and enhances musical dynamics throughout the circuit. Internal circuitry employs a precision low-noise series current source and shunt regulator arrangement for low impedance and low noise performance. An Auto Power Down feature automatically switches the PP4 off when not in use, conserving energy without requiring any manual intervention. An LED power indicator confirms operational status at a glance.
