The REL Planar PL-2 is REL’s most capable ultra-thin wall-integration subwoofer, engineered to deliver true REL performance in spaces where traditional subwoofers cannot perform gracefully. Designed to work in close relationship with the wall behind it, the PL-2 uses boundary effect coupling to make the wall itself part of the acoustic system, projecting deep, room-filling bass and remarkable scale from an ultra-thin cabinet that occupies little to no floor space. With a 550-watt Pure Class D amplifier, an exclusively developed 8-inch FlatPiston driver, a 10-inch boundary-coupled passive radiator, and integrated Airship Direct wireless technology, the PL-2 extends the Planar philosophy into larger rooms and more demanding systems, delivering greater output, deeper extension, and more physical scale than the PL-1 while preserving the speed, control, and musicality that define REL.
FlatPiston Driver: An Entirely New Approach
The PL-2’s 8-inch FlatPiston active driver was developed exclusively for the Planar platform. Producing deep, powerful bass from a driver barely 80mm deep required an entirely new approach to excursion, rigidity, and control. The rigid, controlled structure of the FlatPiston driver allows it to move with authority while maintaining composure and precision, delivering fast, dynamic bass that extends to minus 6dB at 24Hz in room, reaching more than an octave below the fundamental range of many acoustic instruments. The result is scale and authority that feels far larger than the cabinet itself suggests.
Boundary-Coupled Bass Architecture
A specially tuned 10-inch long-stroke passive radiator, featuring a lightweight paper cone reinforced with a rigid aluminium centre cap, fires toward the wall behind the PL-2, using boundary effect coupling to reinforce and expand low-frequency output throughout the listening space. By transforming the wall into part of the acoustic system, the PL-2 produces deep, room-filling bass and remarkable scale that feels effortless and expansive, well beyond what the cabinet’s dimensions alone would suggest. REL’s VIMAR (Vibration Isolation Material and Resonance Control) system, integrated into the mounting brackets, manages the interaction between the cabinet and the wall surface, reducing the transfer of unwanted energy into the wall while preserving the speed and integrity of the bass for cleaner, more controlled low-frequency performance throughout.
550-Watt Pure Class D Amplification
The PL-2 is powered by a 550-watt Pure Class D amplifier, conservatively rated and delivering a clean 600 watts on REL’s test bench under demanding conditions. Proven across thousands of REL subwoofers, this latest-generation design combines high current delivery with long-term reliability, producing fast, powerful bass with remarkable composure across both music and theatre applications. REL’s fully analogue input filters preserve speed, timing, tonal balance, and the organic character that define great music and theatre reproduction, while the renowned REL High Level Connection allows the PL-2 to receive the same signal fed to the main speakers for exceptional whole-system integration. All-analogue PerfectFilter circuitry delivers deep, extended bass with clarity, speed, and balance throughout. Dedicated High Level and LFE inputs operate simultaneously for dual-use music and theatre systems, preserving musical coherence while delivering the full impact of cinematic low-frequency effects.
